I have a five year old machine running windows ME, with a Pioneer DVD ROM DVD116 drive and a Pika One DVDRW Burner IDE 1004, (which i think is a re-badged version of something more common). Both have been working ok with the burner also writing disks with Nero until recently. As Nero was unreliable and stopped working i removed it thinking to use some other software, but now when i look in device manager and right click on either drive they show as simple CDROM drives, (which explains why i cant burn a disk). I'm not sure how to get them recognised as dvd drives. Hope you can help, thanks.

an old pc will only see it as a cd rom as dvd's did not exist so if you try to burn a disc with xp it only see's a cd rom drive.

if you install any burning programme that will see it as a dvd drive.
