I have decided to replace my old ipod with a new one. I have 500 songs on the old one, some from cd's, some from itunes. Can I transfer them to the new one?

you can put them back on itunes and sync your new pod to your itunes.

Yes you can. Someone recently sent me a new ipod nano with songs already downloaded in it from their own ipod. I don't know how they did it though, I think they created a new "playlist" on their itunes and put all the songs they wanted downloaded into that.

You need third party software to help you copy music from iPod back to comptuer, because iTunes couldn't help you do that. I have been using this iPod transfer to copy my iPod files back to computer for a long time, it works really nice for me. Here is a step by step guide about how to copy songs from iPod to PC
