Scanning a photo etc

I know this may be a long shot but I am hoping somebody will be able to give me some tips.A friend has given me a photograph which he wants to be put onto a sheet of paper,coloured so that it resembles a parchment,and then insert some wording underneath.I realise I have to scan the photo first of all,but after that I am afraid I know nothing.
Any help please ?

Well you could do with some photo editing software, like Photoshop Elements or gimpshop or something (gimpshop is a free alternative).
