I am trying to set my new Acer laptop up to my Netgear DG834G Wireless broadband router (Netgear) - having already set it up (using wires) to my main PC - this works correctly...
However - when the Wireless is enabled - the laptop "sees" the Router but I can't log in
I have tried the Security DISABLED and the various options of encryption

What I am using is "auto" speed (not b or g)
I guess that what I am asking is what security settings I should be using and can anybody confirm the speed is set correctly ?

I have tried using Laptopdirects 24/7 helpline - but surprise, surprise - no response
I thought that this was too good to be believed
I take back my recommendation that anyone interested in buying a new Acer laptop should look at them
They do not actually stand by their support promise of 24/7 for the first 7 days after purchase .....
Have you installed the ISP software on your laptop? If not, do so now..

Firstly, try this. TURN EVERYTHING OFF! Modem, router, pc and laptop.

Turn the modem on, and when the lights have settled down (after 30 seconds or so), turn the router on. Wait a minute. Turn the laptop on - DO NOT TURN THE PC ON.

If that does not work -

Reset the router to factory settings.

TURN EVERYTHING OFF! The modem, the router, the pc and the laptop.

Follow the installation instructions, but connect both the pc and the laptop to the router by wire. You need only set up on the pc, and it should automatically set up the laptop.

THIRD OPTION:

If your pc is close to the modem, consider connecting directly to the modem by wire, and using the router only for the laptop. Set the laptop up by wire, as you did for the pc.

BUT this way, you will only be able to be online with one machine at a time, and will not be able to network them.

By the way, I had to turn my Zone Alarm firewall down from high security to medium security.

Your laptop should be g - but you can set it to mixed if you wish.

Do I need to set my internet connection on the laptop as the main PC ?
Cos I have already connected the laptop to a neighbours wireless network - which just happened to stray in to my house and was set with no security !!
I used it to update XP !!
Steve - have you tried my first suggestion? Switch everything off - then swith the modem, router, laptop on, in that exact order.
