I do, as all the volume controls are set to the highest settings, but as soon as you stop a track there is a loud almost shrieking noise coming from it ...
I have had problems starting up the computer and fellow answerbankers suggested that I replace the motherboard battery. It wouldn't be connected would it?

The motherboard batter (to my knowledge) is only there to help store the time and to store your BIOS settings while your computer is turned off. Not related as far as I know.
The loud shriek is new to me. Can't help with that I'm afraid!
POOING - are you saying that there's no sound at all? I thought you were saying that you had sound, but no speaker icon in the taskbar. If there's no sound at all, look in "Sounds and Audio Devices" : to the right of the top speaker icon, is there the name of your soundcard or is that blank and most settings on that screen are greyed out?

steve. hope i can explain better, when i first fire up the laptop, it goes though diffirent stages then it comes up on screen no volume control. i then have to click ok but still no sound, no icon in taskbar, also if i press the :FN & the arrows keys the volume bar is red, if i go into audio/sounds in control panel its all shaded out.
Sounds like your computer doesn't know that it should have sound. If it's a PC, make sure the soundcard is connected properly but it's more likely to be a software issue with a driver.
Either download and install the driver again or try a system restore.
Check "Device Manager" to see if there are any warnings in there. Also, the "beeps" e.g. at startup have nothing to do with this : they're produced by a different part of your computer.
