My guess is you have a lot of programmes in your start up folder - so they all have to go their cycles before you are fully booted.

If you are not familiar or comfortable tinkering with the start up, there is an excellent free little programme. You simply untick the programmes you no longer want to start automatically - but if you change your mind/make a mistake, it is very easy to re-tick it.

You answered your own question I quote 'My 5 year old pc'.
I disagree, carby.

There is no reason why a five year old pc that has been kept up to date and maintained should have this sort of problem.
Do you regularly delete temporary files and temporary internet files this will free up your PC.Also regular use of anti spyware tools will help
