MM Links Game 2007 January
18 Answers
Less than 24 hours to go to the re-launch - Are you ready for it?
Over the last few weeks, a number of minor problems have developed as we have tried to put in place a modified event to replace the DT Herculis Link Game.
Three additional rules have been devised to provide a "fix" for these problems. The original rules and the general idea can be found at a previous posting (using the Quick Link below). These still apply.
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Quizzes-and-Puz zles/Question335818.html
Rule 1: The 2-minute Rule. When several entries arrive within two minutes of each other (and it is clear that they have been obtained independently of each other) yet they each introduce the same new (correct) link word, then they will both receive the bonus point for that new link word.
Rule 2: The International Rule. In view of the fact that several entries arrive from abroad, link words should not have relevance only in a UK context. For example, when finding a link for RUSSELL, then JACK Russell is acceptable but Russell GRANT is not!
Rule 3: Word Length. Following the style of MM, link words always had to fit into a crossword grid. As a consequence, the minimum length ever adopted by MM was 4 letters and the maximum was 8 letters. This will apply to all future link words. Furthermore, each link word should be viable as an individual word. Thus REGENT could be linked to SPARK to give REGENTS PARK (This was a recent MM special).
Most AB-entrants will prefer simply to make their four predictions and leave the scoring to the scorer! Note as scorer, I shall never play an active part in any future competition, so that I can remain impartial.
More information will follow.

Each weekly round will be scored as in the past and the points for the month totalled. The person with highest score over January will be responsible for setting the February Link Words, and so on.
Newcomers are welcome. To give an example, the words last week were ARMY, FIRST, DANCE and AULD - and their correct links were chosen by ShamrockBlue (Bless Him) as TARTAN, FOOT(ING), SWORD and REEKIE! Hence we would have TARTAN ARMY, FIRST FOOT(ING), etc.
There's a long way to go! Good Luck everyone!

Good morning crofter, I feel certain that we all agree with the above comment as posted by "rogerr", unless of course you are provided with the links in advance by the incumbent setter to assist you with the complexities of the scoring system.
I seem to remember this was an earlier suggestion.
Bring on the first instalment mate .... we're ready for it !!??
;o)

Thanks for the thoughts rogerr and sarumite but I think that I can be more use being generally available to the incoming setter. I may also need to take decisions that are better made if I am not an "active" player.
I am content with my role of keeping the continuity going - and I HAVE had the experience of winning. :o)

I thought I could slip that in without anyone noticing!
No chance! Do you know rogerr that some people scored 5 good points, when we were practising and then scored only 1 point over the whole of December!?
Anyway I am expecting strong challenges from O-ice (who chops entire Canadian pine forests down with a blunt axe in a single day), Christiana (who crushes grapes in her French vineyard without taken her socks off) and seekerz (the ozzie that ... the least said the better! Her painting skills are such that she can whitewash an entire ... ... ... ... ... cricket team in three hours).
I reckon I should get out while the going's good!

Hello crofter ( keep up the haggis chasing )
You say
Rule 1: The 2-minute Rule. When several entries arrive within two minutes of each other (and it is clear that they have been obtained independently of each other) yet they each introduce the same new (correct) link word, then they will both receive the bonus point for that new link word.
Could I respectfully suggest it becomes
....then they will each receive the bonus point for that new link word.
Also, I feel that you should be able to participate whenever you are not the setter.

TeeGee Of course, I did mean EACH so I should not have written BOTH. In fact I was worried about using BOTH anyway because in the last round THREE entries came very close together (just after mine - came two more) and I got a bonus point and they did not!
I was also a bit concerned that these rules were starting to look like a legal document - but if you are trying to get things to run smoothly, that is what tends to happen.
With luck, everything will go smoothly (famous last words)

Once more comes the guy from the Croft
To carry the banner aloft
We trust you - We do!
So, 'Have a go,' too
But don't keep winning too oft.
Seriously, you are doing a great job. You know best what you want to do, so whether you enter or not will be your own decision and not the decision of the Abers..
