Don't know what you mean, really.

If you have a wifi enabled laptop you can connect to the web if you are in a wifi hotspot, or hooking up to somebody's unsecured network.

You can connect through a mobile phone - very expensive.

Or by satellite - even more expensive.
or cable?
Technically there's still a modem involved somewhere in the above situations. E.g your phone acting as a modem.

If you already have one, like the phone above or connecting to anothers wifi, then you won't need to buy another. But the chances are for a home user you will need a modem.

Still have a modem.
Technically the 'modem' supplied with cable connections isn't a modem by the common definition. But you still need something called a modem.
