You probably have too many programs running in the background, which is just too much for 256mb ram, but to access virtual memory..
Right Hand Mouse click "My Computer" then select "Advanced". Select Performance Settings. Then Advanced.
You should see Virtual Memory settings and how windows is set up to use memory on your pc. My advice to you is to select System Managed Size, then go back to the visual effects tab and select "Let windows choose whats best for my computer"
Agree with badlad on this topic. You haven't a great deal of memory so your set up is kept busy managing it for best performance.Default settings sometimes yield poor performance because the swap file enlarges and shrinks with use and quickly gets fragmented and this will cause system glitches.Try this and see how it performs for you..
In Control Panel....open System icon
Click ...Advanced ....then click ..Settings...in Performance section...Choose ..Advanced tab...and click ..change...This will bring up Virtual Memory window...then select Custom size...as you have 256 mb....multiply this figure by three and enter 768 into the Initial size window and the same figure in the Max Size window..Now both windows are showing 768 mb...click O/K on any open boxes and thats it !!
This has improved memory management performance for a lot of PC'S I've worked on.but.everybody uses the p/c for different things and some get different results. If it doesn't work for you..go back to the previous settings...Your memory is borderline for todays applications though so you may not see earth shattering results.. Good Luck !! Ed......
Sorry Alfie...forgot to tell you to click on "set" after you enter the new sizes.Do this before you click OK to close the open boxes.. Sorry about that !!
