I am thinking about getting broadband. I know what ISP i want to sign-up to, but they suggest I get 'filters' for my phone sockets which do not have the modem attatched. What do these things do?

The broadband modem also has to have a filter. Very easy to do. Instructions will be supplied. If I can do it anyone can. Every phone you have must have a filter. Also if you have sky interactive, you will need one there as well.
Just to clear something else up, I understand you also need one on the socket with modem attached. They don't make this clear on any of the notes I have seen. Each filter (splitter) has an outlet for a phone and an adsl modem and you plug your instrument into the appropriate outlet. You need one for every instrument eg phone, satellite, normal modem, adsl modem. You can apparently have a maximum of 4 on each line. I bought 4 on ebay for 10.
