pop ups???????

Hi now i'm good on the computer but........not technically minded, just this last week i have been getting pop ups from somehere that says 'CID blah blah blah and they are usually stupid dating sites, fri**ing annoying and it never used to happen? now my AGV is all uptodate so is there something that has expired or someway i can prevent it? also my computer has gone on a g-o s-l-o-w do you think the 2 things might be connected?
also on my task bar that says 'pop-ups blocked' it now says 20 whereas for the last 12 months its been 1 or 2?
Too many questions i know? sorry, but thanks for any 'sensible answers' : )

thanks, my avg has apparently expired and i have tried to download a free one, except its not fully installing then it says 2 errrors has occurred!!!!!!!!!! damn machine! Are there any free ones or do i have to pay via credit card?? : /

I can recommend Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007. You can download a free 30 day trial, and then buy a license after the 30 days are up.

I downloaded the trial, and bought the cd with license on ebay for about �22. I used that license after 30 days for a years subscription. It costs around �45 if you buy it from Trend Micro directly. Works really well though. Once it has learned what is good and bad, it leaves you alone and just gets on with it.

Download Avast Home edition anti virus, its free for home users and my computer has never been so clean!!!!

Owesyd is correct about avast a good friend of mine installed it for me 6 moons ago and i haven't had a problem since. I hope I'm not temping fate here!!
