When I start-up my desktop shows 45 icons with the prog. name below, the same as anyones.I would like to disenable quite a few of these. When I go to msconfig>startup I do not recognise any of these progs.in relation to the desktop icons for me to disenable any of them to speed up startup. Is there a SIMPLE way of doing this. I know I have asked this question before but for a "dimwit" it didn't sink in..

This is a bit laborious but if you go here
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
and type in the .exe part youll be told what program it belongs to and whether its necessary or even bad.
Desktop Icons have nothing to do with Startup, they are links to programs or other files. The links are stored in

C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Desktop

To remove an icon from the desktop, just click to select it then hit Delete.

Thanks Mac 70 I'll have to try and get my head round that.
Hi rojash I want to disenable the progs.(not delete)Doing as you say I'll only remove the icon, but do nothing about the progs.that I want to disengage. I think!!!!
You say that your desktop shows 45 icons with the name below. That doesn't mean they are running programs - just that you have shortcuts to them on the desktop. You don't need to disable them from the startup because they are not part of the startup - they don't run until you double-click them. So, iof you are trying to reduce the number of programs at start up, the fact that you have a number of icons on your desktop is irrelevant. If on the other hand you want to reduce clutter on your desktop, you can just delete the icons.

Hi rojash I can follow your line of thinking, getting rid of the icons would help to tidy up the desktop.but I want to disenable the progs.that those icons represent.I think it was you that guided me through msconfig>startup. This is where my brain disengages.I don't recognise the ..names..listed to beable to uncheck the ones I seldom use....Don't give up on me PLEASE!!!!

Hi there Mac70 I've just got round to doing that web-site that you suggested, after a bit of groping around I got the hang of it.I've only opened up my PC twice since, but there is a definite improvement.Long may it continue.Just got to wait, and see if I've unchecked something I didn't want to.THANKS!!!!
I'm trying very hard here: You won't find them in the startup section because they are not run at startup. You don't need to disable them from startup - they don't run at startup. They are just icons on your desktop.

Hi rojash,Mac70 sent a web-site to me that explained which progs. on start-up were neccesary, optional or unneccesary, and as you tried very hard to get me to understand, they were nothing to do with the icon/progs.
My wife thinks that I'm hard going as well. Thanks for keeping going!!!
