what is the best way to protect modem wired and wireless for surges and spike (malicious or not)? Doing a home learnig course and stuck on theis question and would really appreciate a reply asap.

Most moderb UPSs have lightning protectors, and you can also buy stand-alone ones. You just connect between the phone line and the modem.

I am assuming that you are talking about power surges. If so you can simply plug the peripherals into a surge protected extension lead.

for �10.00 or so you can get an extension lead with both mains AND telephone surge protection built in .... master socket to protector to adsl filter to modem to rest of house ... the "official" BT way is to use earthed gas discharge tubes connected to each leg of the line.

If you are feeling lucky you could point out that if the router (or device) is using a switched power supply the likelyhood of damage to the device from spikes is reduced anyhow (but not to the psu).
