Laptop hangs on startup

My Daughters laptop has just developed this fault, when she starts her laptop it just hangs on the start up screen, anybody got any ideas?

When the laptop is booting up, press the F8 key and select safe mode from the list of options.
Then select start>all programs>accessories>system restore.
When the system restore screen appears, click restore my computer to an earlier time, look on the calendar which appears for dates in bold type. Select each in turn working backwards in time and look for evidence of something being installed. Select the last date before this one and click on restore. You will not lose any files such as word documents etc.
I should have mentioned - make sure you log on as administator at the first screen. System restore is only available to the administrator in safe mode on XP Home.

I tried it and it just keeps re-booting grrr!!!
