sound comes through onboard speaker

i bought an ibm NetVista personal computer 8307-31G off e-bay but the seller has configured it to run off the internal speaker instead of the on board sound card i get static when i plug speakers in half way but once the speaker jack is in i get no sound it just comes off the onboard speaker its loud enough to hear but i cant go any louder any one any ideas how to change this !!! ive tried looking at manuals for audio jumper settings but i cant find anything tried disabling drivers re installing new ones to no avail it seems you lot know what your all talking about on here so please any feed back would be great please dont ask me to buy another soundcard coz the one thats in seems fine also no chance of contacting the e bay seller as the details are lost. HELP

In the sound & Audio settings in the control panel you have the option to select which sound device you want to use.

Might be too simple to even be that but you never know :P

hi thanks anyway paul theres only one device thats soundmax its definatly not a driver or device problem its something to do with the jumper settings i think coz theres obvously 2 outlets for the sound that is on board speaker or audio jack just comes out the speaker when i try to install drivers for other device they seem to over write the soundmax seems the audio card is there but system bypasses to onboard speaker ???????

Go to Control Panel>system>hardware>device manager and look under sound, video and game controllers. Click on the + symbol to identify your sound device , double-click on the device and check at the bottom of the page to ensure that such device is set to ENABLED.

Also check that there is no yellow exclamation mark, which would indicate a driver problem.

ok thanks for the help so far guys but i have checked all the devices soundMAX integrated audio the device is fine checked again with speakers before i get sound from onboard speaker but when i plug lead in from speakers all the sound goes off so the problem is definatly a hardware issue the speakers work fine on other pcs and i made sure it was plugged into correct port honestly thanks again i appreciate the support but its nothing to do with device drivers ???????

I might be stating the obvious but have you checked that the sound is not muted ? (Double click on system tray loudspeaker item, to verify )

Ok have you tried the BIOS?? all hardware config happens there on startup so maybe an option. Have a look around as most BIOS software is different.

yep i checked the bios it says audio support is enabled . will this be enabled onboard sound ?
i.e through the on board speaker ? or if i disable it will i get no sound perhaps it will allow the card to recieve the audio signal omg this is a bad head im fairly good with computers and can remedy most problems but this one has me stumped im not so good when it comes to motherboard specs. as for it being muted i do get sound so if it was muted i wouldnt get any it just wont come through the speakers it goes off as soon as the audio jack is plugged in thanks again all.

Yes, but the sound is coming from your INTERNAL speaker, which is not controlled by the settings in control panel. Sugggest you have a look at your audio settings, to see if EXTERNAL speakers are muted. Also, are your speakers amplified ? If not, then this could be the cause of the problem.

puzzlerus im not sure what operating system your running but on my windows xp there is no option in the control panel to mute external speakers i wish it was that easy there is however an audio setting where you can raise lower or mute the audio but this just making a difference to my audio which is the internal speaker now i do belive there is a smaller speaker that plays the bleeps and alarms (not windows sounds) but this aint the speaker im on about the one im talking about is fairly large and is connected to the motherboard via two pins just beside where the audio jack is connected ive tried disconnecting it from motherboard but then theres no sound at all even tried cutting the wires from external speaker and connecting the wires to the wires on the internal speaker (bad idea pc froze n crashed lol) i may have to buy another sound card but i dont like to be beaten and im sure the problem can be rectified i dont want to buy another pc coz this one is a fair bit faster than some offered on the market for nearly �/$ 500+ and i certainly dont wanna pay for some snidy engineer to come out and pretend he knows more about pcs than i do as ive said before its nothing to do with audio settings or drivers this problem is on the motherboard once i can get a signal to my audio jack without it diverting power away from the internal speaker or even divert all power from internal speaker to the audio jack (which I think is something to do with the audio jumper settings) i can dabble with the settings and drivers and sort it out cheers all who have tried to help
