DVD BURNING

Please\can someone help,this is driving me crazy.I have just purchased an external DVD burner that is compatible with both the + & - format.I have also purchased a DVD player that plays both of these formats.I have just burn a movie to a DVD-RW disc,but when I put it in my DVD player,I get a disc error message.I must be doing something wrong,but I do not know what.The movie I burnt to the disc was an AVI file.Do I have to convert my files into a different format before burning?

avi no good for play on dvd players.
you got to get something like tmpgenc to assemble your movie as vob file or create disk image then all will be ok
