I've downloaded a program to my desktop, its now installed in Program files with a shortcut on the desktop, is there any reason to keep this program on the desktop or can it be deleted? Thanks

Yes both the installation file and the shortcut file can be deleted.
It may be worth keeping in case you need it again.

I keep a folder in "My Documents" called Downloaded and all the programs I download go in there.

You never know when you may need to install it again.
If the program is now in program files (i'm assuming you coppied it from the desktop download) then that original can be deleted no prob (recommended) the shortcut icon is your own preference, if it's not used often, keeping desktop tidy etc..

I wouldn't keep any progs on desktop just the shortcut if you do use it regularly
As VHG says, the most sensible thing would be to move it to a folder set aside for all your downloaded installers. If you ever need to re-install, you will need it - and, as Kidd72 says, the desktop is not an ideal place to store anything but shortcuts.
