if i was to buy a new PC without anything on it (Xp or vista or anything) and i was to borrow a friends XP set up cd (and the security number) would i be able to put that on my computer? or would it smehow "know" that its already installed on another comuter already and not work? are there any cons to this? its just im struggling to find a desktop package for under �350 that has XP on it

If your friend has activated his XP then it cant be activated again and you would have to re-install.
Unless you play a lot of games, have you considered Linux?
I'd agree. If you just want it to web browsing, typing letters, spreadsheets, etc., then consider Ubuntu. It's excellent, and free.
