I,m running windows XP and replaced what i thought was a faulty keyboard with a new microsoft one which is compatable with XP , the new one has started doing the same as the old one i.e. swapping keys around - any one any ideas .

Seems to me you have USA regional settings set up for your keyboard.
Go to control panel click on Regional and Language options. Then customize the regional options to English (united kingdom) then click the apply box at the bottom right.
