If you want to go down the illegal route, download a program called Limewire from the link below. Click on the get basic option and download the free version of limewire. When the download is complete, install the program.
A Limewire icon will appear on your desktop.Double click on the icon and Limewire will open.On the left hand pane you should see some options such as audio, images, video, etc.click on the audio option, and then type in the name of the song that you want. After a couple of minutes lots of results should appear. now all you do is double click on the song you want, and it will start downloading. One tip to remember is to pick the song with the highest number that appears on the left of the list of results. This should mean that more people have the song available for you to download from, and should result in faster download speeds.

By the way, I think Torrents are a MUCH better way of downloading music than Limewire.
Limewire tends to be for individual songs, and because the naming of files is up to the individual you often find after downloading a file it is not the song you expected.
With Torrents you download whole albums, or even sets of Albums.
Just this weekednd I downloaded 20 albums by one artist in a few hours.
And there are far less viruses than using Limewire.
To complicated to explain how to use Torrents here, but search in Answerbank for the word Azureus and you will find some places where I have explained it.

Could I just jump in and here and ask about ports when downloading torrents.
I know quite a few people who use mininova/bitlord etc but as I understand it, you have to leave ports open for the transfer of data. Isn't this risky?
I'm using a Belkin wireless modem/router and have Norton AV plus Zone Alarm on the PC. The last time I looked into this it seemed a lot of fiddling around was necessary with the modem/router settings to byepass the hardware/software firewall protocols etc, perhaps compromising the security of the system.
Don't misunderstand me, I'd really like to try downloading torrents myself, but I can't help feeling I need an Idiot's Guide!

chamois,
When I set up Bitlord it automatically selected a port for me. I use a wireless router also, and I have never had to change any settings once the intial set up was completed, and even then I think I only had to adjust the download and upload speeds.I also use Zone Alarm, and once you allow the first pop up stating that Bitlord is trying to access the internet, all should be fine.

I would suggest a kind of half-way-house in obtaining music. Sites like http://www.gomusic.ru (and the now defunct allofmp3.com, may god rest it's soul!) provide music at VERY cheap rates. At Gomusic most tracks cost 19 cents. It's so cheap as to be well worth it, and unlike Limewire you are much less likely to get a nasty of some sort on your computer, and you definitely won't get corrput mp3 files which Limewire can sometimes be flooded with. However, you have to buy credit using a credit or debit card, and as it's based in Russia then you may feel uncomfortable with that. All I can say is that I have used them for a couple of years now and received nothing but excellent service.
It's much easier than I thought! And downloads are so fast! I downloaded many songs and as they say, it was perfect. Now I am discovering all the music that I can download. This is SO cool!. Try it yourself http://www.kazaa-platinum.com
