My HP DeskJet 840C printer only prints black, pink and green. I've changed the cartridge but this has not cured the problem. I refuse to get it repaired as it would be cheaper to buy a new one. But before I do scrap it, any thoughts on how I might fix it?

If you've ruled out the cartridge, it's worth re-installing the driver to rule out that too. Use the HP toolbox to align the cartridges. Good luck.
A deskjet uses injector nozzles to apply the ink to the paper. It's possible that some of them may be blocked. You should check your manual for print head cleaning instructions.
I too suffered this problem, even when installing new cartridges. Cleaning the little electrical contacts inside the cartridge holders with switch cleaner cured my problem! I hope it works for you too!
