Derek!!! Hello my little sunbeam xxxx :-)

Have you tried loosening the noose round it's neck?

Errr sorry, I dunno.........
A million and one things.

Computers follow instructions. Nothing more, nothing less.

If they get an instruction that's conflicting, or doesn't make sense, or something unexpected happens, the computer doesn't know what to do. It can't decide for itself, so it stops.

Usually, it's errors in the software (device drivers or system or application software), so it's up to those that develop the software to hunt down the bugs and hopefully remove them.
Control,Alt, Delete < Task Manager < Processes. Look at CPU and see if any readings are running high and delete them if they arent necessary. Always been the solution whenever that's happened to me, though there could be plenty of other causes!
if you want to have a poke arround
start with disk cleanup

then MLin's startup is easier to try out than sysinfo
http://mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
to see what starts up with windows

a good reference of what should be running is
http://sysinfo.org/

If you are getting regular crashes, bsods hangs etc .... it's probably best to backup your precious files (while you can) .... and re-format, re-install the machine.

things (old installs etc) inevitably pile up and it's a good idea to have a clearout - I do mine every 12 months or so
