Have you considered putting a 2nd hard drive in your comp for storage? It is so simple even I could do it.
Your best bet would be to go for a CD-RW (Compact Disc Re-Writable) drive, as they are fairly cheap (start from around 30 I think), and the blank discs can be bought in bulk at a low price. Your local computer shop should be able to install one for you, shouldn't cost any more than 50, and it will come supplied with CD burning software (which is required to transfer photos from your computer to a CD). Many pieces of software can now create discs with your pictures on which are viewable on a DVD player, on a normal CD. DVD writers are more expensive, and not really necessary if you're only storing photos. A standard CD is 650mb in size, and an average photo is likely to be around 1mb, so you can fit up to 650 photos on a disc. Hope this helps!
