We have upgraded to 'upto' 8mb from just 2mb we signed up for, it is a free upgrade. Thay haven't given me a activation date a such but just the email 'below' there is no IP address with the email, and I have tried restarting the router but we still get the same (just under 2mb) I understand that it is not quaranteed 8mb and is 'upto' but we are based very close to our exchange so we should be seeing some difference. We have a Edimax ADSL 2+ broadband router by the way, any help would be great thanks, oh and you will have to talk in layman's terms if possible, otherwise well you can guess! sadly that is about as fast as you will get off BT's option 3

You broadband speed is governed by the other people sharing your broadband line, you may hit the dizzy heights of 3-4mb when it is very quiet but at normal times you will experience a drop in speed down to 0.5mb

this is simply because BTs technology is old and there are too many users, BT have refused to upgrade their technology so you will end up getting annoyed!, I hope you like the technical support because you will be using them a lot!!

I have ended my contract with BT due to poor service, my neighbour is also having the same problem with the connection frequently cutting and being very slow.

I am now on cable and all is well (for now) I hope you dont have a similar experience with BT that I have had..

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with bt cazz but I have yet to meet someone who hasn't.

Yes I have had terrible trouble with bt, for many years , major problems that has cost the business dearly, if I was to write them down in order it would take days.

I would have hoped for more speed, I think there might still be something I am missing because the level is exactly the same at it was, I am just a technophobe you see. I may still be set up my end for 'upto 2mb' as apposed to 'upto 8mb'but I could be wrong. I think I am option 1.
at least you're not on talktalk. they promised for 18 months to upgrade me from 2.2 but never did. which is why i have just ditched them.

there is no setup required at "your end" - the connection and speed are controled by the exchange - cazzz rightly says that the overall speed is governed by the number of people sharing your equipment (contention ratio) ... but on business the contention ratio is lower so the sustained speed should be faster.

(you'll only be given ip address if you are paying extra for fixed addressing)

"close to the exchange" .... how close?
5Km is close ... but you'd do well to get better than 1.5 - 2 Gb/s

couple of things ....it could be
the connection is adaptive ... and it takes a few days to determine your useage patterns.

the router (there are a number of Edimax ADSL 2+ models)
is it wired or wireless?

what do you use the connection for?

how exactly are you "measuring" the new speed as 2Mb?
how many PCs are connected ....

if wireless ... and measured from a pc ... the speed is determined by the link ... which is governed by many factors ... distance, thickness of walls, material used in walls ... people near you also using wireless.... the list is endless.

looking at the price of these routers .... they ain't exactly top spec .... so that could be a factor also

oh and btw ... hi I'm ac ... and I've never had any problems with BT

Distance from exchange? approx just under a mile, I can see the building from my office window.

The router is wired.

Router is used to connect two pc's runing xp to each other and to the internet for general surfing, email. But at the moment the sharing ot documents and files between our two pc's seem to have run aground and I'm having trouble re establishing the link, internet is still fine though thats different kettle of fish.

I am measuring it on the gadget show website test and also my pc tells me the connection speed along with the router when I log on to it's stat's.

All internet connections have an ip address (bit like a phone connection) - If you surf and log on to services ... you don't actually need a fixed number ... so your provider gives you a new one whenever you log on ... (IPs actually may change several times a day).

If you host a website ... you need a fixed number (ip) so that people can find you and connect to you.

Addresses cost extra so if you don't need one ... don't worry.

1 mile is bad (for bt)... you should be connecting at 6-8Mb
however ... download speeds rely on other factors as well ... the quality of the line and the exchange configuration (currently I'm getting 6.5).

alarm bell about your file sharing (lan)
whatever the speed of your broadband (wan) connection ... the final step is internal (lan) and if that's stuffed ... it could contribute (most dsl testers download a variety of files to your pc ... so it's the same kettle for all your fish!)

As I say ... the connection is adaptive .... so it will take up to 2 weeks to settle (that assumes they have done the work yet (I'd expect an e-mail telling you)

Thanks AC for your response, thank you for helping and talking in laymans terms as well, you must be the first person I have talked IT stuff with on here and understood. So thanks for giving me time.

So all and all I will wait it out a little, see what happens, As I have said we have had one email so far which doen't give a date of activation, so they might have not ungraded us yet, or maybe we have to wait for it to calm down. Fingers crossed X
