PC won't shut down...

this is due to one of two programs that will not close properly: "iexplore.exe" and "Adobe IE helper" or something similar.

The only way I can get it shut down is to continually hit End Now for the offending program and to keep trying to shut down in between.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

To answer your Q:
I'm sure i've done that at some point, but i'll give it another go and get back to you.
At a guess, the problem lies with the Adobe IE helper, as, if it won't close, it probably prevents IE from closing. Adobe IE helper could be related to Adobe Flash Player or Adobe Reader/

Uninstall Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player completely, download the latest versions and install them.

http://www.adobe.com/
alternatively go to
tools | internet options | programs | add ons

(the exact option wording depends on which version of IE you use)
and disable the helper add on.
(my money is with rojash - it's probably the helper)

if it works ... you know where the problem is ...
uninstall/update as appropriate
if not ....
disable each addon in turn
