is it possible to connect a laptop to a tv/dvd player? to watch dvds and listen to music through the laptop itself and if so how?

i didnt realise you coud buy laptops that didnt have a disk drive/dvd/cd thing in the side

sorry rather ambiguous what i asked. im wanting to watch things from my laptop via my tv set, not the other way round!
