Does anyone have any recommendations for a fairly lightweight laptop that won't break the bank? It needs to run XP. I need it when I travel, and the ancient clunker I have (from work) is just too heavy and the department too mean to buy a new one. I am not specifications literate, so I need everything explained in layman's terms, if possible. In fact, I don't know the difference between a laptop and a notebook. Many thanks

There is no difference between a laptop and a notebook.

Several things:

What do you need to do with it? Do you need dvd drive? A large hard drive?

Do you need a fairly standard size keyboard?

There are some lovely 'ultra portable' laptops with 8" screens - I know of one that is around 200, but it doesn't have windows.

With a laptop that size the keyboard will be very small.

Will it be an additional computer, or your main computer?

Hi, Ethel
Thanks for the quick reply. I have a PC, and for a laptop II would need a fairly standard sized keyboard (old eyes aren't what they used to be and I can't touch type). As I often have to spend a fair bit of time in hotel rooms, I would like to be able to watch DVDs. I would happily pay circa 500 if I thought I was getting a good deal.
I like the look of this - it has an 11" screen:

You should go to PC World or similar and have a good look at what's available - what suits me may be totally wrong for you.

aprillove - love your best bet is a tour of PC World, Currys Comet & Dixons ..... tesco, sainsburys ....you get the idea

I think what you're after is the equivalent of a pair of shoes .... and you need to try them on.
I look after a Toshiba Portege r200 which fits the bill ... but relies on a docking station for most external connections

the smallest lightest is the Eee pc -

but it's not windows -but it is compatible

You will need to see how much your current laptop weighs first.

Weigh it with and without the battery and charger then you can ask around before you buy one that may well be heavier.

Weights of batteries and charges vary loads and often make a "lightweight" laptop feel very heavy !

Thanks, everyone. Think I'll hang in for a new work one - can spend the money on a spa break instead.
