lost pictures

i was out with friends at the rugby on sat and took several dozen pictures on my canon ixus digital camera. unfortunately only half the pictures have registered on the memory card (as i found out when i came to download them onto my computer)
is there anyway of recovering the missing pics or are they gone forever?

do you always wait for the flashy thing to stop?
mine has an led that flashes while writing .....
the problem is .... as the MPixel count has risen incredibly recently..... file sizes increase .... but the write speed of sd hasn't that much
at high resolution ... my fuji602 takes approx 1 pic every 2 seconds or so
in a sporting event this is vvvvvvvvv slow.
your I is about twice the res .... so 3 seconds min I'd have thought ....
