Is there a way to take a laptop back to the way it came out of the box.
My laptop Medioon 95924 has a 40gb HDD, less 8.5gb for the allready installed windows I think? leaving 31.5gb for me to play with. I would then have think twice before I installed any programms.

I'm guessing 8.5Gb = windows vista?
the original would have been XP(?)

whichever ... you need the machine drivers
and the install disc - or a recovery disc.

31Gb isn't a huge amount ... but it's not laughable either
your best bet would be an external USB HDD.
and a little discipline .... progs on the system disk

your files go onto the USB .....

Yes there is, but it depends on what disks came with the laptop.

Have you got a user manual, either in paper form or on the hard disc? It will tell you how to restore it to factory or default settings.

With 31 gig free, I can't imagine why you feel you have to think twice before installing any programs - even MS bloatware doesn't take that much!
I 've just upgraded a machine for someone who had a 10 gig drive, and that weren't exactly desperate for more space

I don't know much but for argument sake - if the Recovery disk is used won't the computer go back to its original settings?

I have a Medion Multimedia Notebook MD96290. In the Manual it states the following:

If your system is not functioning properly and Windows Vista SYSTEM RESTORE did not solve the problem, then you should use the Application Support Disc to restore your system.

LIMITS of the RECOVERY
* Changes made to the origional configuation (RAS,DESKTOP, or Internet settings) and installed Software will be ignored by this recovery and will not be reloaded.
* Driver Updates or hardware installed by you will be ignored by this recovery.

WARNING ! All data on drive C will be erased. If necessary, backup all required data on drive D.

This recovery will reset your system to it's condition at delivery. Printer installations or other additional software must be reinstalled.

Preforming the state of delivery
1. First, please read the entire System Restore section of the Windows Help file.
2.Insert the support-Disc and reboot the notebook.
3. Select the option "Boot from CD-Rom"
4. follow the instructions on the screen.

Very easy if you have the application and support disc, which I think Medion always provide. The difference is , figure, the recovery disc is just the windows disc, so you would lose any software that came with your computer, plus you would need to reinstall some drivers.
I`ve used application and support on mine a couple of times, much quicker and easier than formatting and reinstalling windows.
I have Nero 7 and other free software that came installed on computer, so they`re still there on return to factory settings.

I've done the recovery disk installation several times, yes, you're absolutely right. I lost all the software that came installed on the computer. However, I did manage to get the other necessary drivers and softwares online free and installed them. The only one I had a problem with was Nero - I was only allowed two week free. But, then I learned Windows Media Player did a satisfactory job. My computer is working perfect.
