setting up PS3 internet

We are trying to set up our PS3 to go online but are struggling to get a connection. We have typed in (what we think is) our IP address and WEP number but all attempts to connect fail. A wireless laptop has been connected to our modem/router in the past so we know it works. All these numbers are confusing us. Help?
