My Acer is nearly 4 years old, used constantly and no problems with the casing.

What model is it?
big same problem as mine ..mine is all taped up corner broke right off ..my son has a acer his is over a year old but he keeps his on a desk open ....i was reading on the net a lot of other people had same problem and acer fixed it for them ...get him to ring acer ....x
I'm afraid to say a lot of laptops are under engineered when it comes to a few areas, the main problems normally happen around either the hinges or around the screen catch.

Whilst most of these small cracks in the plastics are often in no way detrimental to the use off the laptop, and on older laptops can often be stopped from spreading anymore by a tiny bit of superglue being run very carefully into the crack as your sons is less than a year old I would say look into getting it repaired under warrenty.
the hinge are to tight ... acer know they have this problem ..im looking for what i was reading on the net about it big i will put link up when i find it

Thank you for your speedy help .It's an Aspire 9300 series.
He is worried that if they take it for repair he may lose everything on it . Would he , or would they just replace the lid ?
they should just replace the lid... remove the hard drive if he is really worried they don't need to boot the laptop up for the reapir.
''He is worried that if they take it for repair he may lose everything on it .''

Back everything up on to cd/dvd just in case...

My goodness snagged , he's got so much on it , I think that would take a lot of discs and a lot of time . If it's only the lid and , as markysngc says , it won't interfere with the hard drive , he may be ok about sending it away .

Gosh sleepy , that's awful
instructions on how to remove hard drive from that model

you dont need to remove drive from caddy, and this should not effect the warrenty in any way, I have sent several laptops back for repair with the hard drive removed.
''My goodness snagged , he's got so much on it , I think that would take a lot of discs and a lot of time .''

Buy a separate/removable hard disc and back everything up to that instead... he should ideally be making back ups regularly anyway, in case for any reason the lappy goes t!ts up...
