justed scanned a template which needed editing went to print it out and the size had changed.

scanned what, to what, with what - what size was it ... what size is it?

make sure whatever it is you are scanning is WYSIWYG what you see is what you get, i.e change the scan size to full page 100% if it's bigger you haven't changed the size of the scan.
