I was thinking of buying a cheap laptop for my parents so that they can see photos, avi. files etc. that my brother overseas sends them. Is there a cheaper alternative? e.g. notebook, palm thingie?

get a laptop for them, anything else would only save marginal money for a huge loss in performance and usability.
Tesco, asda and most supermarkets sell good enough laptops for the sort of use you say, you can also get good but very cheap laptops from dell direct, have a look round but don't spend over �300

Digital photo frames only display photos � you have to down load the photos to a memory card and then insert the card in the photo frame. I don�t think they are what you want.
