AVG Update

I'm getting a message from AVG saying i've got to upgrade to version 8 - before end of may - i think
However they appear to be asking for a payment - and at the same time offering a free upgarde - i think ( if i am happy to continue manually monitoring my online security and i have my own layered security approach )
layered security ? - double dutch to me , not being an expert on the subject .
Any advice , anyone ?
Thanks

I think you must have the full (paid for) program - I looked at their website and they are offering an upgrade to version 8 of the full program to current program licence holders. From what you say it sounds as if your licence runs out at the end of May and you have to pay to renew it to continue with their full program.
I'm with you on the jargon - I can only guess that layered security means other antivirus programs that you may have.

You can download the AVG 8.0 free version from here

I have downloaded and installed the free v8 about a month ago.
Note that during the install it tries to install a browser toolbar that you may not want.
Select the advanced install, and when you get asked about the toolbar select No.
