Transfering music and files within a network

Ok, so I have a new laptop which has Windows Vista.. and my old computer is on XP...
I need to know how to transfer files from the old pc, to the new laptop... considering that one has the XP system, and the other is on Vista....
I've read about using Workgroups.. and also about enabling folders to be shared on the old pc (which I've done.. ) But now I still don't know how to reach these folders using the new laptop. Where do I look?

What are you trying to achieve? If you want to move your music from one to the other, then a simple usb stick would do the job - copy to usb stick, then download to new hard drive.

If you want to share the music files so they stay on the old pc, but can be accessed by the laptop, this can be done.

You need to be sure both pc and laptop have the same workgroup name, and both laptop and pc are switched on.

They should be accessible in 'My network'.

Assuming that you have networked the two machines together and that they are both members of the same workgroup:

On the Vista machine:
Double-click the Network icom on the desktop
In the right-hand pane you should see both your computers
Double-click the XP computer
You should now see any shared devices - folder, drives, printers, etc.
You can treat these just as you would the drives on the Vista machine - i.e. open a folder, open a file, copy a file to another foldet, etc.

Thanks Ethel, it's the second option I was looking for....
I've created the Workgroup on both machines... but I don't know how to retrieve the 'shared' files using my laptop.

They are both switched on... but there is no 'My Network' folder on Vista (laptop)...

There is 'network'.. but when I go into that, I can't search for the shared files on the network or anything.
