Vista Back To XP

I have an Acer laptop which when i bought it had windows xp on .later had windows vista put on it but now i want to put xp back. I bought a xp disc but when i put it in i get a message saying that it cant install because i have a later version installed. i suppose this means the vista .
could anyone tell me what i am doing wrong?

you aren't doing anything wrong ... that's what should happen .... but unless you have the vista disk or some other bootable CD windows 98 floppy it's not going to be easy to get round
