Anyone tried Google Chrome yet? I have - never realised how many ads and pop-ups were on AB before!

What's google chrome and what does it do that AdBlock plus doesn't?

Gosh, Ethel, I thought you of all people would know! It's a new open source browser from Google. As installed it doesn't do any ad blocking, hence for the first time, I discovered all the junk that's on the AB site.

Well first impressions aren't good.

It seems slow, miss Adblock and CPU running at over 45%.

Well, it doesn't seem particularly slow to me, but otherwise my impressions are pretty much the same as yours, Ethel. To be fair though, I understand that Google were obliged to release it earlier than they intended, due to the accidental leak of the details onto the net.

Technically, it sounds like a good idea, but I think we will have to wait and see what evolves. The absence of an ad blocker means I certainly wouldn't use it at the moment, and the fact that Google's revenue comes from advertising would seem to indicate that an effective one may be a long time coming! Hello Rojash and Ethel,
I have to say after using Chrome for a few hours I think I will stick with it.
At first I did not like it because I could not sort my bookmarks how I wanted them.
Now thats sorted I love it.
Ethel, you say cpu is at 45%. With IE my cpu would sometimes go to 90odd% practically stopping my computer.
What it was doing I do not know!
Give it a chance.
Your opinions after more time would be interesting.

had a quick look at work today. wasn't impressed so think i will stick with safari.

However on a longer term basis i think that goggle are moving into using their browser to run application through. So you can log in on any PC and have access to google word or google excel. That will be interesting and a direct threat to Microsoft who have talked of these remote application for a while but haven't managed to get anything up and running.

Richard, I already use Google Docs for word processing and spreadsheets, available from any pc in the world via any choice of browser.

I had to uninstall Google Chrome because bizarrely it was gobbling up my CPU even when shut down.

It is not that I tried it with a blinkered view - I am very pro-Google, having used GMail for years and Google Docs since its inception. And Google is by far the best search engine for me.

I may give Google Chrome another go in the future but for now, I will stick with Firefox

At least it doesnt just take over and become your default browser.
I am finding it very fast but at the moment not very intuitive.
Perhaps the options are there somewhere but I havent found them yet.

I would love to use it; I like its clean look. BUT it is incredibly slow. My laptop is old with poor graphics and I thought it was that but it is also slow on my desktop machine. It was advertised as being fast but Firefox 3 is much faster and has the advantages of all the addons like ad blocker etc. Being open source, perhaps the addons will come later but meanwhile I'm not using it.

Anyway, Chrome isn't a browser. At least not as currently thought as. It's meant to be an OS for web-based apps. It's trying to do what multitasking did for regular OSs.

It's got a while before it's useful for anything real (that regular browsers like Firefox can't do), but it's a stepping stone.

I was interested in it as a replacement for the browser, not as a replacement for my browser - I luuuuurrve my Firefox!
