Can you use a computer monitor to watch sky by plugging the sky+ box into it using the hdmi socket. Or can you plug the sky + box in via the modem. I have seen a dell desktop with 22" monitor and am wondering if it can also replace my lcd tv in the bedroom.

Sky+ box doesn't have any HDMI outlets, I assume you mean Sky HD. These have a dvi outlet which may work with a laptop depending on the connections the laptop has.
This site has a picture of the back of a Thompson Sky HD box
