disc read error occured

I have an old ibm thinkpad a22e laptop. when i turn on laptop i get "disc read error occured press ctrl-alt-delete to restart when i do this it goes back to the same screen. ive tried a number of sugested solutions but it still doesnt work ie: taking out battery,cmos battery,reseating harddrive,i cant reload windows from a recovery disc (xp or 98) I can get into bios by pressing f1 and have changed to start from disc but it still does not work .I would be extremly greatful for any solution for this problem thanks in advance

If you have re seated the hard drive and it shows it in the BIOS but the XP disk won't install onto the drive (what error do you get BTW) then you may have to simply accept that the drive has gone to the great hard drive place in the sky!

it's not a huge cost to replace the drive

disk shows in bios ,cd starts to run but stops after ten or so seconds leaving blank black screen
say goodby - and then switch it off.
it's time to let it go to the light (presumably deep blue)

alternatively
a new hdd isn't going to break the bank

don't go mad - it's not worth it - and a huge disk may not be recognised (it looks as if 80Gb is the biggest it ever shipped with) - if yours was bigger fine - just bear it in mind
32 will be safe 40 should be safe - but just possibly ...

thanks for your help just wanted confermation that hard drive is kaput. by the way its a 40gb hd at present -cheers jg
