AGV updates problems

A couple of months ago my son updated my free AVG. he is a professional computer techie, as a resuly I am being bombarded with other anti-virus pop ups despite having a pop-up blocker. The last two weeks I have had pop-ups for sites such as Ladbrookes, Bet online and the such like, sometimes 4 within a minute, these are not on sites I have ever visited. Today my computer has closed itself down, apparently of it's own accord 5 times within a couple of hours. What is going on? Unfortunately the said son is at Uni now cannot call on him. Any advice would be welcome, but please keep it simple.

You say he updated AVG AND A RESULT YOU ARE BEING BOMBARDED WITH POP UPS.

You make it seem these two events are linked, when they almost certainly are not.

I have AVG and never had a problem with pop ups etc. I am sure many others are in the same situation.

Somone who has used the computer (maybe you) has somehow downloaded some spyware or similar program and that is causing you to get the pop ups.

You need to download and install an anti-spyware program such as Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy.

Hopefully they will find it and delete it.

Thanks vehelpfulguy, I had not thought of it this way, I've had AVG for several years with no trouble, but it did seem odd that the day after he put it through a full check that the problem arose. I do have a spyware thingy, can't remembers it's name, but it pops up as a spiky little green man that fills in your name an address. Could he be the culprit?

No idea how to install Adaware or Spybot Search, so will wait until James gets back from Uni next week, half term, unless you could talk me through it, albeight very simply. Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

Just remembered the little green guys name, Gaytor .

Get rid of Gaytor (Gator?).

Download BitDefender (free version). It finds quite a lot of things.

Also find Windows Defender and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.

I assume that you've heard of Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy as well.
