Why is it that every time I shut down my PC, windows wants to download and install updates? Just recently it has been happening every time I turn off. I could understand it happening once in a while, but every day is becoming a pain in the neck.

I believe Microsoft usually only release fixes once a week, on a Tuesday.

A lot of fixes came out on the 9th of December

And recently the very serous IE bug was found so they decided to rush out a fix.

That came out within the last 12 hours (I got it installed today when I started up my Vista PC this morning).

That may be why you are seeing more activity than normal.
I'm having the same problem. I click to download the latest update but get a message at the end saying it was unable to download the update. Next time I boot up, the same download is waiting again!!
