This has come up on my screen. (SYSYEM MODIFICATION ATTEMPT) System control has noticed that an application is trying to modify the system registry or the start up which is potentially dangerous .The application is USERINIT.EXE C/WINDOWS SYSTEM32 So what I would like to know is do I ACCEPT OR NOT . I recently put my Tesco Internet Security back in as I was having problems with avg. Thank you for replies to explain what this is and whether to accept or not.

USERINIT.EXE is part of Windows XP. Under normal circumstances, this program will run for a few seconds after you log in, and then it should disappear from the task manager.

Put USERINIT.EXE into google, and you will find a lot of information.

Thank you for your reply.Yes I did google but wanted a bit more info so my brain would understand better.
if you've just changed your security ... it will be learning what's "normal" for your system ... almost everything you install or use will save info of some type ... and so is modifying your system.

a reasonable rule is .... have you just done something?
installed or opened a new prog, logged into a new site ...

if the answer is yes ... allow it
if not ... something isn't right

generally you get another chance ... so if you say no and then find whatever isn't working ... you can answer yes next time and fix things
