laptop keeps crashing

My daughters laptop will all of a sudden turn itself off. I know there could probably be many reasons for this but I'm wondering if it could be over heating as it does seem to get very warm - is this normal???

Good possibility it is over heating if it's just turning off without warning.

Does she use it on her lap? Despite the name they really do need to be used on a hard flat surface to allow air to circulate under them.

or it may need a good clean out of the air vents, fan, and heat sink... depending on the laptop this can be a real pain of a job.. or really easy.
