Slow connection speeds

I have a Dell Latitude notebook computer with a 3Com mini pci 56k modem. I have just changed my internet connection and i cannot get the computer to connect at anything faster that 2.4bps. I have tried looking at all the usual settings and can't find anything different. Any ideas what it might be? Cheers.

I spent ages looking at a similar problem. The most likely thing is a bad cable connection. I know it sounds really stupid but honest I spent hours reinstalling,tweaking etc only to find it made no difference. I finally  madesure the cable was really well plugged in and it worked fine.

You must be right Mothy, because I can get it to connect at 56K from a different phone socket, I have just found out. So it must be either the cable of the socket itself. Thanks.
