Screensaver: if you leave your computer for some time (5mins, 10mins, whatever), you can set a screensaver to appear. This is some moving graphics or words or pictures, that are designed to stop your screen from having image burn issues.
This is an issue for any screen with cathode tubes (the older huge, heavy screens), with phosphorus layer. Images that stay still on screen for too long can 'burn in' and leave marks. Hence the moving graphics of the screensaver.
New LCD screens do have a siimilar issue, but not quite the same, and definitely won't be affected so soon.

You also have animated wallpapers these days, but screensavers are now only used for entertainment, they serve no real purpose other than that. You'll want to be careful downloading them though and pay attention during the installation so that you do not end up with unwanted programs on your computer that will slow it down.
