Gamepad control of PowerPoint

How can I change a displayed graphic when someone hits a gamepad button?
I can change the graphic in PowerPoint using the keyboard, but is there a way of using a gamepad?
Failing that, how do I recognise gamepad buttons in other languages e.g. Visual Basic?

Thanks ChuckFickens. Good idea but not quite suitable in this case.
I should have described the full problem. It is for a demonstration for parties of schoolchildren. A tethered gamepad costing 2-50 would be less attractive, and safer, than an 8-50 laser pointer. But I'll look for an infrared or radio pointer - we must be able to find a chain sturdy enough to secure it for a while.
