I had my rabbit put to sleep a few years ago but every now and again I think do they really put them to sleep. I worry that the vet might just have given an anaesthetic and my rabbit could have woken up a few days later underground

They stop breathing
their hearts stop

pretty difficult to wake up a few days after that
Sorry for your loss, it is sad when you lose a pet. However, I don't think that is very likely - I am sure that they cremate them afterwards. Although, if they did bury it alive, at least as a rabbit it would be able to dig its way up to the surface ;o)
Like Annie says, I think they're incinerated. Bit hard to come back to life from that one!
And they said she couldnt get any more bizarre.

Well lookout bizarre

If it is necessary to have an animal put to sleep, the owner should be with the animal for the procedure. Once the injection is given, the animal gently slips into a deep sleep, and within a few seconds, the heart stops beating. That is the moment that the animal leaves this life. The vet listens with a stethoscope to the heart to enable him/her to pronounce the death. You can rest assured that once the heart has stopped there is no possibility of the animal waking up again.
Maybe this should have gone in 'pets'.....
My word !

Ignoring all the idiots and thanks to all the non idiots

I was only 14/15 when rabbit was put to sleep and no wasn't in same room, said goodbye to him and then they took him into another room and then they gave him back wrapped in a blanket in a box and we buried him in the garden.

It was actually a serious question because I didn't think there was an actual drug that could kill you but if they just fall to sleep and then the heart stops beating thats ok. I'm glad. :-) I love my bunny x
