Weird phone message

Over the last week or so my parents' house phone had a few phone calls where they've not answered but a very odd message has been left on the voicemail. All it says is "(something, not heard properly) is your friend". It's apparently in a really creepy voice. Each time it's been exactly the same and they think it's a recorded message. I'm going to visit so will listen to it myself later and try and figure out the first bit.

Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has had anything like this and what it could be? I told my mom to contact BT if it persists. The number's withheld so not sure who it could be. It sounds pretty freaky and not had anything like this happen before!

you can have an interceptor put on the phone gloop, BT will help you with this, they will intercept each call till they get to this one then they have ,or did have ,a internal body who would be able to trace it and they could be prosecuted too, another option after that would be for you Mum to go on a register that would block all this type of of call like the overseas call centre ones, what happens there is, from a computer a random number of calls will be sent out, eg, 10,000, but maybe there are only a couple of people doing this, hence the silence when you pick the phone up, again BT will advise you, hope you get it sorted

don't know if things have changed but certainly a few years ago BT would only take action if you reported this to the police.

that very well still could be like that craft, it's a long time since me and Mr Joy worked for them., but if I were gloop that is exactly what I would do, especially if the parents are elderly, this can be frightening for them

Hi gloop:

1. Make sure your parents keep a log of these calls, time, date etc, as well as the actual recordings.

2. Make BT aware if the calls persist over about a month.

3. If calls persist, report matter to Police who will need to be involved if your parents wish to pursue an official complaint.

4. Your parents would have to be prepared to make a written statement of complaint and, if required at a later date, attend Court.

5. The Police can arrange with BT, once a formal complaint has been made, for a trace to be put on the incoming calls to your parents' phone.

6. If this is still in the early stages, it is not unknown for such calls to be discontinued before long.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will tell my mom. She's doesn't seem too bothered by it really at the mo. Think I am more than her and I haven't even heard it yet! It just sounds spooky. They are in their sixties so not elderly. I'm sure it would bother someone older or alone and vulnerable though. If it persists I will get her to report it. I doubt she would at the mo. I've heard recorded messages before like prize draw rubbish and all that but I just don't get what the purpose of this one is. Just seems strange and random really.

You will have to inform the police and then phone bt and let them have the crime reference number. It may be that they offer to change the telephone number free of charge, of course there is the hassle of letting everyone know, but it will give them peace of mind.

But once it has been reported they will trace any call that comes in subsequently. Unfortunately it could be a pay phone and then they cannot pinpoint who made the call. More than likely kids having what they think is a laugh. Shame they don't think of the people at the other end of the phone.

See if BT will block all calls with withheld numbers.

When I used to work night shifts the phone often used to ring just before I went to work and a mans voice used to say ( has he gone yet ) when I answered he just put the phone down !

I never quit understood it.

To be honest gloop - even when a number is witheld, these nuisance calls still come through - when you dial 1471 it now seems to say 'caller's number not known' whereas it used to be 'caller's number witheld' - so somehow there is a loophole in the system that these calls get through.

I agree with other posters - get in contact with BT.

den53 if I remember correctly there is a difference in the messages. 1 is where the caller has withheld the number and the other is when the person calling is ex-diresctory and their number is automatically withheld....
