Logging off, shutting down

My Dell with Vista can take a long time to power off; it doesn't always depend on the number of sites visited or facilities uesd.
Is there any way of shortcutting by not logging on as I am the sole user?

I don't really understand your question.

First you talk about shutting down, but then you talk about starting up.

If there is only one user account, and the user doesn't have a password, you won't get the log on screen. In other words, you can speed up the start-up by not having a password.

Shutting down has absolutely nothing to do with logging on.

To delete the password, go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Remove your password.
