Windows 7 is due to be released over the next year so I wouldn't bother with Vista unless I really had no choice.
I jave XP and it' fine, we also use XP at work. My friend upgraded to Vista, and wishes he hadn't, he says it's a nightmare.
I have machines running XP, Vista and Windows 7 RC1.
In order of preference they are Windows 7, XP, Vista.
So like the the others, I would say wait for Windows 7.

But I'd also say that there's no real advantage to upgrading (and there may be compatibility problems with your existing hardware) unless you are buying a new computer.
I have Vista on my laptop and XP on the desktop. I would not recommend it. Wait for Windows 7 which they reckon is all that Vista was supposed to be.
